A mother says her family is lucky to be alive after a fire broke out in her house extension on Wednesday morning, crediting a smoke alarm for saving them.
A mother whose house caught fire on Wednesday morning has said she is devastated by the impact on her property, but also grateful that a smoke alarm saved her family. Quantity surveyor Patricia Power was awoken at five in the morning when an alarm went off in her home.
Fire Breaks Out in Extension
I opened the kitchen door and the amount of smoke and I could see the fire in the extension, she recalled. The couple rang the fire brigade and six fire engines arrived with 50 firefighters, ready to do battle with the flames.
They were absolutely amazing; we had six of them, Ms Power said.
Overall, Ms Power admitted she feels both devastated and brokenhearted about the fate of her extension - but also very lucky.
Gratitude for Smoke Alarm
Then you look out the window and you just see the burnt extension, she said. But at the same time, I am trying to be positive and I am so grateful to that little white box that saved my family, is all I can say.
The fire caused significant damage to the extension of the property, but no injuries were reported. The quick response of the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading to the main house.
Ms Power expressed her heartfelt thanks to the emergency services for their swift action. She also highlighted the importance of having a working smoke alarm, which she credits with saving her family's lives.
