men’s basketball coach Rob Lanier noticed something. His Mustangs had run out of steam. They had struggled to close out the game defensively with the same effort level they started with.“The fact of the matter is,” Lanier said after the loss to Arizona State on Wednesday, “it comes down to toughness.”

“I was saying Efe looked bigger during the game,” Lanier said on the postgame radio show. “You know what I mean? I thought he would look short next to [Lampkin], but he looked big and strong, and he played that way.” A deficit at that juncture could’ve signaled an even larger deficit to come, considering how SMU had finished in its prior two games, but the Mustangs outscored TCU 20-10 the rest of the way. It wasn’t enough to win, but it was encouraging.

In order to keep the latter, Lanier pointed to the importance of samples – pieces of evidence that show SMU’s players they can be the team they want to be, even if it’s brief or in one facet of the game.
