Smurfit WestRock chief executive Tony Smurfit was named Business Person of the Year at The Irish Times Business Awards in Dublin on Thursday night. Under the terms of the $24 billion deal, Mr Smurfit was chosen to lead the merged entity with Smurfit’s chief financial officer Ken Bowles becoming executive vice-president and group CFO within the group. Smurfit chairman Irial Finan became chair of the enlarged entity. “We have 100,000 people across the world, there is a great executive team and I have a great board who support our ambitions. Our transforamtion journey from being a very small box plant in Rathmines to being the largest paper and packaging company in the world is quite remarkable, operating in 40 countries and all of the products we do for our myriad of customers.“In a sense I’m honouring my grandfather and my father and the people who work in this company.
