“I’m shocked I have clothes on too”, said Lizzo–Tonight’s SNL host. The singer is pulling double duty tonight as guest star and musical talent. This is her first time as host and second time as musical guest. Her light-hearted intro details her life as an artist, cussing in front of her mom, and body positivity.
She thanks the audience and makes a proclamation about her appearance on the show, “We’re gonna break the record for the amount of times bitch is said on live TV!” Lizzo points out that her mother is in the audience, and how when her mother came to see her perform for the first time, she was reluctant to cuss. “I hate cussing in front of my mom,” she exclaimed. “The first time my mom came to see me perform. I had to warn her mom when I’m on stage, I’m gonna say some bad words at the time.
She goes on to mention how it’s important for fans to know the performer is has different parts of her personality that led to her giving a Ted Talk on a culturally relevant topic. “The Lizzo you see on stage is different from the real me, I got a serious side as well,” Lizzo said. “Like last year I had the honor of giving a Ted talk. It was about twerking.” She continues, It was about the history of twerking and how it comes from West African dances like Mapouka. Yeah. Deeper than you thought.
“It’s actually why I live here. If you say you’re gay in New York, you can ride the bus for free and people just give you pizza. Honestly, if you’re gay in New York, you get to host” he joked. “This is the gayest thing you could possibly do. Like, I came out right onto the stage. We’re basically in an Andy Warhol fever dream right now.”
She ends her speech on a positive note, reminding her fans and the SNL audience to love themselves as she loves herself. Everybody should love themselves. You know, at every show I tell my audience the same thing and I’ll tell y’all too–I love you. You are beautiful and you can do anything. I’m living proof of that. I used to live in my car and now I’m up here hosting Saturday Night Live!”is available on Prime Video.
