Snooker star Elliot Slessor was taunted by fans chanting "there's only one Gregg Wallace " during the Snooker Shoot Out after days of controversy from the rowdy crowd in Leicester. The tournament, which was won by Tom Ford this week following his final win over Liam Graham, has been blighted by outbursts and heckling from spectators.
The event has different rules to normal snooker tournaments with one frame matches and a 10-minute shot clock. Fans are allowed to make as much noise as they want inside the arena, unlike in regular competitions where they must be silent during plays. The relaxed nature of the tournament comes after comments from champion Ford, who claimed he went for a two-hour bottomless brunch with friends before participating in the event. Slessor was targeted by some spectators as they chanted by comparing him to Masterchef presenter Wallace, who has been suspended by the BBC amid an investigation into allegations of inappropriate behaviour. The 60-year-old has strongly denied the accusations, including fresh claims of harassment. Wallace is facing allegations from a total of 13 people, including BBC TV host Kirsty Wark. Chanting at Snooker Shoot Out has already led to stern criticism from onlookers. The majority of snooker fans expressed their annoyance with the inappropriate chanting from fans on social media, saying it was ruining the experience for everyone else. One wrote: "Great tournament idea but one or two ruined it for a lot of snooker fans who had paid good money to be there. Most of the fans seemed a lot of fun but the couple of rogue ones should have been removed. Disrespectful to the players AND the fans." Another said: "This is disgusting and not on at all. That crowd have been an absolute embarrassment the last couple of days particularly." A third added: "I found it awful to watch. A bit of banter is fine but that was c**p. I turned off. Like being in a Wetherspoons after lads have been on the session all day."
