An SNP minister has hinted a controversial plan to ban alcohol advertising in public places could be looked at again despite it previously being ditched. Elena Whitham spoke out today after official figures showed the number of Scots killed by drink-related causes is at a 14-year high.

Health campaigners have long called for a clampdown on brewers and distillers using high-profile sporting events to market their products. But it prompted a furious backlash from businesses who feared it could see whisky distilleries unable to sell their own products to tourists. "While we are back to the drawing board – that doesn’t mean that it’s cancelled and it’s not going anywhere,” she said. "It just means that we’re going to have a slightly different focus on it, but my focus on it is absolutely from a public health perspective.”
