The top-seeded Phoenix Suns needed to make brief work of the Pelicans in round one of the NBA playoffs. Instead, they're fighting for their survival.
NEW ORLEANS — T-shirts with the slogan “You Gotta Fight” on the front were draped over every seat at Smoothie King Center prior to Game 4 between the Suns and Pelicans Sunday night. And for the next 2½ hours or so, the Pelicans did just that. The game was occasionally ugly, usually messy and only competitive for three quarters or so. It was not what anyone expected in a first-round matchup between a No. 1 seed, the Suns, and a No. 8.
The Suns don’t look like the team that won a franchise record 64 games in the regular season, and from the beginning of the season to the end was the NBA’s best team. The Suns are not at full strength, not since guard Devin Booker suffered a hamstring strain in Game 2. He’s missed, obviously, but this series being tied isn’t just about Booker missing two-plus games.
