About 50 Tory MPs supported the amendment, so the Government faced losing a vote on it because Labour had already said that it would back the plan. Setting out his reasons for backing the amendment, former Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith said the Bill should “absolutely” be about protecting children from online harm and abuse.
“It’s about those who are most at risk, those who cannot defend themselves, those that get dominated by online harms, this is the area where we have to act, and that’s why I’m supporting the amendment,” he told GB News.
