The 2024/2025 Fuel Allowance season starts on Monday, 23 September 2024, and it will be paid for 28 weeks until April 2025 to help households who struggle with winter bills
We are approaching the 2024 Fuel Allowance season for eligible households, where €924 will be paid out over the course of 28 weeks. Fuel Allowance is an extra payment that helps cover the cost of heating your home if you’re on social welfare payments.
If you get a social welfare allowance and struggle to pay your winter energy bills, this is where the Fuel Allowance comes in. It is paid in a weekly instalment of €33, or in two lump sum payments if you meet certain criteria. The first payment will be made in the week of Monday, 23 September 2024. Weekly payments will be on the same day you get your pension or social welfare payments. If you opt for two lump sums, these are usually paid in September and January.To get Fuel Allowance you must: If more than one person in the household is getting a social assistance payment, you can decide who applies for Fuel Allowance. If someone in the household is getting a qualifying social insurance payment, such as State Pension or Invalidity Pension, they should apply first . Another qualifying person in the household can also apply for Fuel Allowance, but they must include information about the person getting a social insurance payment.Fuel Allowance is a means-tested payment. This means that the Department of Social Protection examines all your sources of income. Your gross weekly income must be below a certain amount to pass the means test. If you are not getting a social welfare payment, your Fuel Allowance can be paid directly into your account in a financial institution or you can collect it from your local post office. Fuel Allowance income limits How to apply If you apply for Fuel Allowance after the start of the Fuel Allowance season, it will not be backdated.
