The Steelers were a playoff team last season, squeezing in on the last day with a 9-7-1 record. A five-win improvement by the Texans, is a bit much to ask for a team with an inexperienced quarterback and so many holes.
Head coach Lovie Smith posted a six-game improvement from his first season with the Bears to his second. That certainly could be done with the Texans, who have two first-round picks in the next three drafts. Their .240 winning percentage the last two seasons is the second worst in franchise history . Only the tank years, 1982-83 and ’83-84, that brought Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon to town were worse .
The turnaround from tanking in the mid-80s was swift. The Rockets won 48 games with the third-best record in the Western Conference and made the playoffs in Olajuwon’s rookie year.
