South Korea's main opposition party has introduced a Bill to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo, escalating a constitutional crisis triggered by a brief declaration of martial law. The Democratic Party threatened impeachment if Han didn't immediately appoint three constitutional court justices, a move he has yet to take. The impeachment motion cites Han's veto of a special prosecutor bill investigating alleged wrongdoings by the first lady among other actions. The move could deepen divisions and potentially trigger a financial crisis, according to the ruling party.

Earlier on Thursday, Mr Han said that he would not appoint the justices until political parties agreed on the appointments, saying it would harm constitutional order for him do it without such a consensus.

The court is set to hold its first hearing on Friday in the trial to decide whether to remove Mr Yoon or reinstate him. On Wednesday, he did not respond to the latest summons for questioning in a separate criminal investigation. Investigators sent him another summons on Thursday to appear on December 29th.Earlier on Thursday, lawyers for Mr Yoon’s former defence minister, who is being investigated on insurrection charges over the martial law declaration, said it was intended to raise alarm at opposition parties’ abuse of the democratic process.
