The main opposition Democratic Party and other small opposition parties submitted a joint motion to impeach Mr Yoon and have now impeached four officials. The ruling conservative People Power Party boycotted the impeachment votes.
South Korea ’s parliament has voted to impeach four officials in response to President Yoon Suk Yeol ’s declaration of martial law , which lasted for about six hours. This move came after the president shocked the nation by declaring martial law to suppress domestic political opponents.
The main opposition Democratic Party and other small opposition parties submitted a joint motion to impeach Mr Yoon and subsequently impeached four officials, including the chairman of the country’s board of audit and inspection and three top public prosecutors. Members of Mr Yoon’s ruling conservative People Power Party boycotted the votes, leading to an overwhelming majority for impeachment. The Democratic Party plans to push for a National Assembly vote on Saturday to allow time for ruling party politicians to make decisions
