South Lanarkshire councillors worked together to demand a ceasefire in Gaza.
Elected members at the full council yesterday worked together to pass a motion to call for a ceasefire, release all hostages caught up in the conflict, international co-operation to provide humanitarian aid, and a long-term two-state solution for the people of Israel and Palestine.
“We have all watched on in horror as events have unfolded, with so much death, injury and destruction, and now the spectre of famine. As a council we don’t pretend to have all the answers, but we agree it starts with a ceasefire so that a long-term solution can be pursued by all.” “I acknowledge that none of these asks are directly in our gift, but that doesn’t mean we should sit back and say nothing, quite the opposite. We cannot watch the atrocities that are being committed in Gaza and the undeniable war crimes including collective punishment being doled out on innocent men, women and children on our TVs and on social media and say nothing.
“So maybe you’re thinking why bother, there’s nothing we can do, and that writing to the Scottish and UK Government as we’ve requested won’t make any difference but by supporting this motion and taking a stand, South Lanarkshire Council will be on the right side of history.”
