Spanish tourism secretary Fernando Valdés tells i his country would like to end the rule that means non-EU travellers can only stay for 90 days within a 180-day period – but the decision would be down to Brussels
“What we want is to increase quality but what we really want is for any tourists to visit those destinations. We want families. We are seeing in Magaluf how all these investments are bringing more British families. In 10 years Magaluf has changed,” he said.
Mr Valdés said Spanish government data showed long stays of more than three weeks had risen sharply among Swiss and German tourists compared with 2019, the last year before the pandemic. As COP27 climate talks started this week in Egypt, Spain was faced with a future in which suffocating summers like the one it has just experienced may become the norm. Temperatures rose above 40C in some parts of Spain and the country is still coping with a devastating drought.
“New generations are starting to travel with a new mindset than their parents or grandparents. They want to be part of the destination. It is something that we want to attract.”
