Irish holidaymakers heading to Spain should prepare for torrential rain, strong winds and possible travel disruptions as the country faces a series of weather warnings, with major tourist destinations like Costa del Sol and the Canary Islands expecting heavy downpours until at least Thursday.

While Spain is known for its sunny climate, weather warning s - including Status Orange alerts - issued by its national forecaster AEMET have raised concerns for holidaymakers, especially those heading to some popular tourist destinations.
An unusual weather system has gripped Spain, leading to torrential rain and strong winds that have already caused significant flooding in some regions. The unsettled weather is expected to continue for several days, with the forecast predicting very strong downpours, storms and frequent hail until at least Thursday, March 6, but likely extending to the rest of the week. AEMET has issued a special notice warning of "very strong and persistent showers" hitting the Mediterranean areas, Andalusia and the Canary Islands, where rainfall accumulations could exceed 100mm in just 12 hours The forecast highlights holiday hotspots including Costa del Sol, Valencia, Alicante, Tarragona, Murcia and Almeria as well as the Canary Islands as some of the hardest-hit areas, with intense rain potentially disrupting travel and outdoor plans. The weather conditions have already led to major disruptions, with record-breaking rainfall reported on Sunday, March 2, in the city of Soria. A total of 39.2mm of rain fell in just 24 hours, breaking the city's previous March record of 31.8mm set in 2013. Major flooding has also hit Gran Canaria, where tourists and locals are being advised to stay indoors due to rising water levels posing a significant hazard. Approximately 850,000 residents - 40 per cent of the total population - have been rocked by the floods, which have seen piles of mud and dirt cover streets and cars get dragged under bridges. Pictures shared on social media show brown water aggressively stream through Gran Canaria, which is rural and mountainous. Water on higher ground has trickled downwards to the more densely populated areas, including those in the south popular with tourists. In Tenerife, at least 80 people were trapped in a supermarket amid flooding recently. In Valencia, on the mainland, a red alert which has now been downgraded to Status Orange resulted in schools closing across the region as a safety precaution. Looking ahead to the rest of this week, AEMET said: "On Wednesday and Thursday the situation of instability would continue. The largest accumulated are expected in the provinces of Valencia and Castellon, exceeding 100 mm in 12 hours and more than 150 mm in 24 hours. In surrounding areas such as the south of Tarragona and the north of Alicante, it will be possible to exceed 60 mm in 12 hours. "On the other hand, a new increase in instability is expected in around the extreme southeast of the peninsula, with showers that can be strong or very strong in areas of Almeria and Murcia, also affecting points in western Andalusia on Wednesday and on Thursday to the surroundings of the Strait and Costa del Sol. The instability will continue from Friday. Current information, within a context of increasing uncertainty, suggests that the most affected areas would become the northeast of the peninsula, the Central system, the southwest of the peninsula and the Strait area, where rainfall would return to be locally strong and persistent. "The Canary Islands will also be affected by intense rainfall, with showers that today and tomorrow may be locally strong, or even very strong, around the most prominent islands, and without ruling out that they are also in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
