The regional government in Castile and Leon had proposed measures for pregnant women seeking an abortion to listen to the foetus' heartbeat and get a 4D ultrasound scan
after a regional government proposed restrictions which women’s health experts said could be harmful.
In Spain’s highly devolved political system, the 17 regional authorities have responsibility for health policy. Juan García-Gallardo, Castile and Leon’s vice-president who is a member of the far-right Vox party, had proposed last Thursday a “foetal heartbeat protocol” for women who were between six and nine weeks pregnant.
