Speaking ‘from the heart,’ Rob Lanier prepares to build bridges with SMU basketball | JoeJHoyt

On it were four bullet points — talking points that he didn’t want to forget, in case he rambled, like he said he has a tendency to do.
Lanier’s gaze, mostly, didn’t stray from them, and by not sticking to his script, he showed his focus. “I want to build a great program,” said Lanier, who has been to the tournament twice as a head coach, including this season, “and I want to get to the point where getting to the NCAA Tournament is something we’re longing for, but it’s something that we do.”
“When the call came, I was like, ‘I don’t know if we can say no to this,’” Lanier recalled. “We at least have to go talk with them.”On Sunday, he met with the SMU players,When his speech was over on Monday afternoon, everyone in attendance stood up. The players in attendance threw up their pony ears hand sign as the rest of the crowd applauded.
