'We wait in a limbo state of increasing anxiety and helplessness.' A mother has has told BBC News NI about her struggle to secure a special school place for her son.

By Robbie MeredithParents of children seeking a special school place are left in a state of limbo of increasing anxiety and helplessness, a mother has said.

But as Greenwood is only for pupils up to the end of Primary Two, Fintan now has to find a different special school to transfer to.The search for a new school for Fintan Brown has already begun, his mother said"We did as much research as we could and worked closely with the Education Authority's educational psychologist to consider the best place to suit Fintan's needs," she said.

"Having heard reports in early May that the Education Authority was facing a short fall in some 800 special school places, I was filled with trepidation."Parents of pupils seeking a place in mainstream primaries and post-primaries have already been informed of what school their child will go to in September.

"Instead, we have to suffer the trickling in of information on school places from other parents at the school gates. "There has been an increase in the number of children with SEND and in their complexity of needs in recent years," they added."This has driven a growth in demand for school places in specialist provision, special schools and mainstream, and in particular in pre-school and Primary One.
