Spider-Noir reportedly cancelled by Prime Video after one season despite Emmy success

Nicolas Cage's superhero noir series Spider-Noir has reportedly been axed by Prime Video following a single season, despite earning 11 Emmy nominations and a 92 percent Rotten Tomatoes score. Reports suggest modest viewership and a lavish production budget ranging up to 400 million dollars influenced the decision.

Spider-Noir, the live-action series starring Nicolas Cage as an older, retired superhero turned private investigator, has reportedly been cancelled by Prime Video after just a single season.

The show, which premiered earlier this year, follows Ben Reilly, once New York's lone masked vigilante known as The Spider. After a deeply personal tragedy forced him to hang up his costume, Reilly now works a private eye, older and more cynical, trying to keep a low profile. That changes when he accepts a case involving mobsters, monsters and a dangerous femme fatale, pulling him back into the violent underworld he tried to escape.

Brendan Gleeson co-stars as Finn Byrne, an Irish mob boss with ties to Reilly's past who has survived multiple assassination attempts. The series was directed in part by Harry Bradbeer, known for Enola Holmes and Fleabag, with Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot attached as co-showrunners. The supporting cast includes Cameron Britton, Jack Huston, Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li and Lukas Haas. One of the show's most distinctive features was its release format.

Prime Video made Spider-Noir available in two versions: an Authentic Black and White edition styled after the classic noir films it pays tribute to, and a True-Hue Full Colour version. The streamer encouraged viewers to sample at least one episode in each format. Critics responded warmly, praising the performances, visual style and ambition, awarding it a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The series also earned eleven nominations at the upcoming Primetime Emmy Awards, the highest tally of any Prime Video original this year. Despite that recognition, reports suggest the cancellation stemmed from respectable but not outsized viewership combined with the enormous production costs associated with the show's lavish period design. Although Prime Video has not disclosed an official budget, estimates circulating online range from 150 million to as high as 400 million dollars.

On a separate note, film fans with a taste for classic cinema can tune in tonight to a broadcast of Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, the restored extended version of Francis Ford Coppola's legendary Vietnam War epic. The story centres on Captain Willard, played by Martin Sheen, a US soldier tasked with a perilous mission deep into enemy territory during the late 1960s.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, the picture remains a defining exploration of the madness of war and the human cost of conflict. In other television news, RTÉ has commissioned a brand-new drama series titled The Murder of Mr. Moonlight, examining the events surrounding what became Ireland's longest-ever murder trial.

Produced in association with the BBC and written by Malcolm Campbell, the show will delve into the disappearance that gripped the nation and the subsequent investigation that dominated headlines for years. The series promises to revisit one of Ireland's most shocking criminal cases in careful detail. Rounding out the evening's viewing options, the 2024 Irish crime thriller Swing Bout is also airing on television tonight.

The film stars Ciara Berkeley as Terrible Toni, a young English boxer carrying a troubled past who dreams of becoming a world champion. Critics have described the indie production as a small film that punches well above its weight, combining gritty crime storytelling with the intensity of the boxing world
