Springsteen's new soul covers album could've been awful. It isn't.
But none of the songs the Boss played that brilliant night were his own. Instead it was a cluster of covers, mostly blues: Huey Smith’s “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu,” Wilie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You” and so on, with the Tangiers Blues Band at his back. Springsteen was not there to promote himself, only to hammer his guitar and have a little fun, as he wailed red-faced to the small crowd.
