categorized a large swath of Pittsburg and Bay Point as food deserts, meaning at least one-third of the neighborhood's residents live over half a mile away from the nearest supermarket.

The new Sprouts store will be part of a 3.69-acre development called the San Marco Commercial Center, at San Marco Boulevard and West Leland Road. The project also includes plans for a fast food drive-thru restaurant, a full-service restaurant and several retail businesses. “We hope that the addition of Sprouts will be a catalyst for commercial in the western portion of Pittsburg,” Pittsburg Chamber of Commerce CEO Wolfgang Croskey told the East Bay Times. “The residents of that section of town are in need of services and retailers to serve their needs.”
