The injustice was not dissimilar to Thierry Henry’s handball in the 2009 France-Ireland World Cup qualifier - There is Only One F in Foley, an eight minute read

Munster-present will see Jack Crowley , Peter O’Mahony, Craig Casey , Alex Nankivell, Calvin Nash, Gavin Coombes and Fineen Wycherley and the others sprinting from the semi-darkness to light. This is Stade Francais, a clash that evokes such storied names as Mick Galwey, John O’Neill, Peter Clohessy, Frankie Sheahan, John Hayes, Ronan O’Gara, Keith Wood , Paul O’Connell, John Langford, David Wallace and Axel Foley.

Munster’s John O’Neill crossed for a try but it was disallowed because the referee and linesmen were unsighted and no try was given despite everyone in the ground and on television seeing it was a try. Says then-skipper Mick Galwey on a Declan Kidney-coached side: “That was when John O’Neill crossed for what we thought was a try.

O’Neill was a big man and, realising the defender was struggling to make it across, opted to take out the risk of going into contact and, sprinting at the corner flag, reached out to dot the ball down in the corner. “They were sending in two and three fellas to tackle him. In some ways, he kept us in the game. He was our main target man, and I was delighted for him at that moment.

“I was dumbstruck. Here we are playing in a semi-final in what’s supposed to be the biggest club competition. There’s lots at stake, not least an awful lot of money. O’Gara had missed four kicks, one of them right at the close, in the 8-9, 2000 final loss to Northampton; there was O’Neill’s try in 2001; and Neil Back’s unpenalised hand in the scrum in the 2002 final against Leicester

The atmosphere was heavy, the weather was foul, Munster fans seemed to have bagged around 4,000 tickets and the small Jean Bouin Stadium, capacity 12,000, was deafening before a ball was even kicked.
