Staffordshire County Council says it is looking after fewer children in care but has seen costs rise.
Staffordshire County Council overspent by nearly £3.8m last year and cited rising costs for children's services as a major factor, pledging to review its care system.
But children's services overspent by £9.7m and the authority said a large part of that was due to the costs of children in care, despite a fall in the number of children it looks after. The council also spent £2.3m more than it had planned on education, partly as a result of increasing transport costs for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities."Like many authorities we are continuing to see increasing costs both to support the most vulnerable children in our care and in other areas of children’s services," the authority stated.
