Opinion: State needs balanced approach after Sacramento shooting, not just focus on gun control

The shooting in Sacramento last weekend that left six people dead and wounded 12 more occurred on a notoriously troublesome corner right by the state Capitol.

Efforts to clean up this stretch of K street started before Steinberg’s tenure but seem to have fizzled a bit under him. COVID certainly didn’t help. Holding criminals accountable will clean up the streets temporarily, but longer sentences do little to rehabilitate those who could be saved. Gun control instead focuses on inanimate objects that are harmless without human intervention. Having grown up in the DC area when it was the murder capital of the country despite a citywide ban on handguns, I am convinced strict gun laws are not the solution.
