Five counties are currently without a manager, while it remains to be seen whether Kevin McStay will continue in Mayo

There are currently five football managerial vacancies still to be filled for 2025 - and there may yet be another with uncertainty surrounding Kevin McStay’s future with Mayo.

Perhaps the time spent on Gallagher could have been put to better use wooing Malachy O’Rourke, who has now been snapped up by Tyrone, all of which leaves Derry scratching their heads, with no manager who is proven at the very highest level within their reach. Could, say, former Derry star Conleith Gilligan, who was part of Armagh’s management team this year, be a target? Maybe another stint for Damien Cassidy even?Kevin McStay’s future as Mayo manager should become much clearer this weekend as he meets with the players and county board.

With it far from certain that McStay will continue for a third season at this remove, The Western People is now reporting that he is to meet with the players for lunch this coming Saturday to thrash things out. A selection committee is in place to choose his successor, with the closing date for applications and nominations having passed, though the committee can go outside of that if it wishes.
