In a phone call to Taoiseach John Bruton, US President Bill Clinton said the bombing"sickens me". The two men discussed the Sinn Féin reaction – Bruton saying that Gerry Adams appeared to have been"completely taken aback by what happened", while Clinton said Sinn Féin was blaming the British for what had happened, which, he said,"under these circumstances is pretty gutless".
