The Irish government is using a new scheme to buy homes from landlords who plan to sell, preventing potential homelessness for tenants who don't qualify for social housing.
The Housing Agency has acquired 120 homes as part of a State scheme designed to buy houses from landlords in situations where their sale plans could lead to homelessness for tenants. Under the cost rental tenant in situ scheme, launched by outgoing Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien in April 2023, the State is authorized to purchase homes offered by landlords who are selling, and where the tenant faces homelessness risk but doesn't qualify for traditional social housing support.
From April to November 15th, the Housing Agency acquired these properties. Dublin saw the most purchases with 23 properties bought for between €220,000 and €645,000. Limerick followed with 16 purchases (€179,000 to €365,000), Cork with 13 (€175,000 to €340,000), Wexford with 8 (€160,000 to €290,000), and Wicklow with 1 (€400,000). Five properties were also acquired in Kildare for between €270,000 and €380,000. Tenants joining the scheme are informed that their rent 'may be reviewed and adjusted' as part of a 'transition process'
