The primary will be one of the most closely watched in Northeast Ohio since candidate Kirsten Hill organized a bus from Lorain County to attend the “Stop the Steal” rally in Washington on Jan. 6, 2021.

Nathan Manning for his seat in a contest where voters must choose between a pragmatic, moderate incumbent willing to work with lawmakers of all stripes to get bills passed and a conservative who will stand by the ideals of the most conservative flank of her party.
The primary is Aug. 2, a special election that had to be scheduled separately from the May primary due to redistricting litigation. Hill said that on Jan. 6, she never entered the U.S. Capitol and was unaware that people had entered at the time. During a recentPlain Dealer editorial board meeting, she said there were many people at the rally, and her vantage point didn’t let her see barriers pushed down or doors opened by rioters at the Capitol. She pushed back on a description of calling it an “insurrection.”
