Storm Dennis: A Status Orange wind warning will kick in for nine coastal counties tomorrow morning

A STATUS ORANGE wind warning has been issued for 11 counties as Storm Dennis approaches Ireland. South to southwest winds with mean speeds of 55 to 75 km/h are expected with gusts of up to 120 km/h, Met Éireann said.

Met Éireann has now issued a Status Orange wind warning for Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.A Status Yellow wind warning for the rest of the country will be in place until 8pm today while the rainfall alert will run until 9pm. The forecaster is urging people across Ireland to be aware that heavy rainfall and powerful winds have the capacity to impact them. Spells of heavy, locally thundery rain, have also been forecast which will lead to some flooding today. Gardaí are urging motorists to be “extra cautious” this weekend. “Cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians should be aware of the danger posed by high winds as they are particularly vulnerable,” Gardaí said. “Drivers of high-sided vehicles should take all necessary precautions and pay attention to the warnings,” they said. The centre of the storm is currently just south of Iceland. However, it is still set to have a significant impact on Ireland. Storm Dennis will bring very wet and windy weather today. Strong to gale force southerly winds will continue with severe gusts and localised thunderstorms. Localised flooding is expected, with some coastal overtopping along the Atlantic seaboard.
