Wind warnings have been issued for Antrim, Down and Derry in Northern Ireland, with strong winds expected to cause some transport disruption. Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland is also bracing for a blustery weekend with rain showers and wintry conditions.
Three counties in Northern Ireland have been issued with a Status Yellow wind warning ahead of what looks set to be a fairly wild last weekend before Christmas on the weather front. The UK Met Office has issued wind warnings to Antrim, Down and Derry for Saturday, December 21 and warned that a period of strong winds on Saturday is likely to lead to some transport disruption in affected areas.
The warning comes into effect at 7am on Saturday morning and will remain in place until 9pm on Saturday night. As of 8am on Thursday morning, no warnings had been issued by Met Éireann for counties in the Republic of Ireland, but it should come as no surprise if and when they arrive with both the national forecaster and weather expert Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather both predicting a very blustery weekend ahead. O’Reilly has described expected conditions between now and then as big coat time as some chilly weather is anticipated on Thursday in particular, with temperatures dropping to close to freezing in the evening and a touch of frost expected in places. It will turn milder on Friday but also wilder, with rain showers expected across the country on a blustery day overall, with those showers possibly turning to hail in places. Temperatures will dip on Saturday night and into Sunday on another cold and blustery day, with wintry showers also forecast. The forecast for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day is a lot less eventful, with Met Eireann expecting it to be mostly cloudy with some light rain and drizzle, which should at least make it a hassle-free experience for those making a last-minute dash home for the holidays. It will be fierce mild, with temperatures hovering between 10 and 13 degrees and no frost expected, even overnight
