The Pittsburgh Steelers are in talks to play a regular season game in Dublin's Croke Park, potentially as early as September. The NFL team, with strong ties to Ireland, is expected to announce the game before Super Bowl LVII.
The possibility of the Pittsburgh Steelers playing a regular season game in Dublin's Croke Park is getting closer to reality. The Irish government was briefed on Wednesday about a potential match this autumn, fueling speculation that an announcement could be made before Sunday's Super Bowl in New Orleans. The Steelers, with strong historical ties to Ireland, secured the NFL marketing rights for the country through the NFL's Global Markets Program.
The Rooney family, who own the team, have ancestral roots in Co Down, and previously played a pre-season game against the Chicago Bears in Croke Park back in 1997. However, this proposed match would mark the first time a regular season NFL game has been held in Ireland. Fine Gael's election manifesto mentioned hosting an NFL game in Ireland, and discussions are reportedly ongoing between the NFL and the Irish Department of Arts, Tourism, Media and Sport regarding the financial viability of such an event. The NFL is planning to hold eight international games next season, including three in London. The Steelers have an extra home game next season and are eager to play in Dublin. Rumours suggest the Green Bay Packers could be the 'away' team for the match, which could happen as early as September. The Steelers were eliminated from this season's playoffs in the wild card round by the Baltimore Ravens. Their last Super Bowl victory was in 2009
