Mr Flynn, 34, emerged as the winner of an unexpectedly tight contest, defeating his party colleague Alison Thewliss by 26 votes to 17 to replaceHis deputy will be Mhairi Black, 28, with the pair expected to push Ms Sturgeon to allow the SNP group at Westminster to have more of a say over party policy and strategy.
A close ally of Ms Sturgeon and respected within the party, she was seen as a continuity candidate and was not expected to push for radical changes had she been elected.
