St Pat's manager Stephen Kenny knows interest in the league is soaring, but says that should come with a warning
Stephen Kenny fears a slew of new League of Ireland fans could be lost forever because match tickets are so hard to get.
“I heard the Taoiseach saying a couple of years ago ‘we’re certainly going to fund academies’ and I haven’t really heard anything since. Dalymount is taking so long, Garret has his plans for Richmond, he showed me them, but it’s going to take time and funding.” "Now, instead of saying ‘Would you like to come?’ it’s ‘You can’t come because we’ve no tickets’. We don’t have any tickets. I’m getting a lot of calls for tickets and it’s difficult when the capacity is so limited.”
Meanwhile, Kenny does not expect Tottenham-bound Mason Melia to be knocking on Ireland’s door this year. Instead, the St Pat’s and former Ireland manager has stressed the importance of letting the teenager find his rhythm again after injury. But loath to put any more pressure on young shoulders, Kenny said it is premature to be talking about senior Ireland recognition any time soon. Ireland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson - slammed by Shamrock Rovers boss Stephen Bradley last weekend - is mulling over his squad for March’s two games with Bulgaria.
