Stephen Kenny has always been a fan of wingers - and Zack Elbouzedi’s arrival at St Patrick’s Athletic is his latest wide-man recruit.

Stephen Kenny has made another big signing as St Patrick’s Athletic boss - and keen observers of the Dubliner won’t be too surprised that he has gone for another winger in former Under-21 star Zack Elbouzedi. He has already spoken highly of his Saints options, including Jake Mulraney, and has added width this summer with Al-Amin Kazeem's arrival from Galway United.

Five years ago, while he was in charge of the Ireland Under-21s and was attending the European Under-19 Championships in Yerevan, Kenny sat down with the Irish Daily Star and spoke about his favourite position. “At Bohs I had Bobby Ryan and Mark Rutherford, to Paddy McCourt, Niall McGinn, James McClean and Stephen McLoughlin at Derry.

“We talk sometimes about the great Irish players in the context of centre-halves. But we must embrace our creative players and Damien Duff was really a special talent.”“With the Under-21 team, the two wingers that we played came from within the league, which was unusual - Neil Farrugia and Zack Elbouzedi,” he said.

“With McCourt it was more instinctive, incredible dribbling skills. There are different styles of wingers.“Before my time there were obviously some good wingers. But I would say, from what I have seen, he was the best dribbler the country has ever had.
