The Crocodile Hunter's death devastated fans worldwide, and it was later revealed that his death had been filmed due to the star's strict rules about keeping the cameras running.
Seventeen years ago today Australian zookeeper, conservationist, television personality, wildlife educator, and environmentalist Steve Irwin died.
These acts of violence were quickly condemned by the executive director of Irwin's conservation organisation. The group were bored whilst in their hotel, with Steve, cameraman Justin Lyons and Stainton embarking on a small boat to Batt Reef for what should have been an innocuous encounter with some typically harmless stingrays.
Justin continued filming as he was unaware of the severity of the situation - however, once the camera panned back to Steve it became clear something was gravely wrong as he was surrounded by a pool of blood. Justin painfully recounted: "He was struggling to breathe. Even if we had reached an emergency ward immediately, it's likely we couldn't have saved him due to the extensive damage to his heart."
Rumours swirled about the possibility of the footage being broadcasted, but Discovery Communications, the network responsible for catapulting Steve to fame, firmly stated that the footage would remain unseen.
