Sleep expert Steven Szary recommends using a simple method to refresh and sanitise duvets and pillows between washes — here's how and when to do it properly

Sleep expert Steven Szary recommends using a simple method to refresh and sanitise duvets and pillows between washes — here's how and when to do it properly, often putting people off attempting to stuff them into the washing machine.

Yet, with spring cleaning season in full flow, now is the ideal time to tackle the task — and there's a far simplerSteven advised: "Leave your duvet out for several hours and it's best to do it in the late afternoon or early evening when the sun isn't too harsh. A little bit of sun is good, though, as it helps to kill unwanted bacteria and germs.

" Harnessing sunlight's natural antibacterial qualities is a simple yet highly effective way of ridding your quilt and pillows of bacteria and dust mites. A build-up of sweat, body oils and dust can all become embedded in your bedding, making it essential to air it out on a regular basis to prevent the potential growth of mould.

Hanging your duvet outside allows greater airflow and warmth to circulate through the fabric, dispelling musty odours and restoring its filling, which ultimately improves the quality of your sleep. When it comes to properly airing your duvet, getting the timing and weather right is essential. Before treating your duvet to a natural refresh, Steven advises choosing a sunny, breezy day after a period of dry weather.

He explained: "If it's cloudy or has rained recently, the air will be more humid and will not be as effective for airing out your bedding", reports After you've found the ideal conditions, bring your duvet outdoors during the late afternoon hours. The gentler sunlight at this time will help safeguard the material and stop your duvet and pillows from becoming stiff, reports the Express. Before hanging anything up, give your duvet and pillows a good shake.

Once your duvet is properly positioned, tap the fabric lightly. This helps separate the duvet fibres and stops the internal filling from bunching up. The best option is to hang your duvet on a washing line. That said, if you don't have one available, you can also lay it over a clothes horse, garden fence or any hygienic surface, provided it's properly secured.

Leave both items outside in the sun for four to five hours. Following this time, your bedding will be completely revitalised and sanitised, setting you up for a much more restful night's sleep.
