Obsessing over whether Ana de Armas sounds American enough to play Marilyn Monroe reeks of xenophobia 🔵 RoseSgueglia for ipaperviews
. We know what Monroe looked and sounded like – exploring someone else’s version of her is a chance to see a very unique spin on an already well-known figure. It might also help different communities empathise with a Marilyn that is more relatable to them. It’s about sharing and divulging a certain type of knowledge to different audiences rather than keeping things elusive and exclusive.
De Armas’ interpretation has seen producer Brad Pitt and more recently, the estate of Marilyn Monroe,and insisting her performance adds a layer of “glamour, humanity and vulnerability”, something, which I agree, is palpable from the first trailer Netflix released. Granted, when the film is released in late September, Ana de Armas’ performance may not be “authentic” – whatever that means – or indeed without criticism. But one thing is for sure, if we give her a chance and stop fixating on her accent, she may just be absolutely brilliant.
