Storm Éowyn is set to hit Ireland on Friday morning, bringing with it a Status Red weather warning that will see schools, creches, colleges, and public transport shut down in affected areas. The National Emergency Co-ordination Group (NECG) advises people to 'stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel', and take steps to protect themselves and their property. The storm is expected to bring gale to storm force winds with gusts exceeding 130km/h, leading to potential danger to life, severe travel and working conditions, widespread power outages, and coastal flooding.

Schools, creches and colleges are confirmed to close on Friday in the counties hit by a Status Red weather warning due to Storm Éowyn.

The storm is set to land in Ireland in the early hours of Friday morning, with various red weather warnings in place across the country until Saturday afternoon. Ahead of the storm making landfall, The National Emergency Co-ordination Group met today to assess the situation and issued an update on school closures. It confirmed all schools, early learning centres, childcare facilities and higher education institutions in Status Red areas will close for the duration of the warning.

The NECG has also advised people in red warning areas to "stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and take action to protect themselves and their properties." Employers should facilitate remote working, and only emergency workers should travel for work.The warnings are coming thick and fast, so be sure to stay updated on Met Eireann's website as the storm draws closer.

They have warned: "Gale to storm force southwest to west winds will bring severe, damaging and extremely destructive gusts in excess of 130km/h.• Unsafe working conditions• Significant and widespread power outages• Wave overtoppingAccording to the national forecaster, Éowyn is forecast to be a deep low-pressure system, currently set to track to the northwest of Ireland introducing strong southeasterly winds which will veer west to south-westerly and intensify through Friday morning.
