Streamlined Vaccination: Boots Makes Seasonal and Travel Health Easy

Travel & Lifestyle News

Boots pharmacies offer a convenient, one-stop solution for both seasonal and travel vaccinations. With a user-friendly online booking system, expert consultations, and flexible hours, protecting your health has never been simpler. From flu shots to international travel requirements, Boots handles the entire process efficiently.

Whether you’re planning a sun-drenched summer escape, preparing your little ones for crèche, or staying ahead of winter bugs, getting your vaccines sorted has never been easier.

With busy work schedules, summer travel planning and family health to balance, finding time to sit in a GP waiting room isn’t always easy. Luckily, community pharmacy access has transformed how we protect our health. Caoimhe McAuley answers your most pressing questions about travel health and seasonal protection and convenient in-store appointments. I have heard Boots offers vaccines, but I don’t know the details.

What specific seasonal and travel vaccines can I get done directly at my local Boots, and how do I go about booking an appointment? We are very proud of our vaccination credentials, being the first pharmacy in Ireland to offer the Winter Flu vaccination back in 2011, and we have continued in this vein of innovation with our vast array of vaccination services.providing all of the details, complete with an appointment booking platform and a GP prescribing pathway where necessary for certain vaccines.

It’s a really simple and convenient service available from your local Boots store at a time that suits you. I need to get travel jabs for an upcoming trip, but I work full-time and don’t have the flexibility to sit in a GP waiting room for a consultation. Can Boots manage the whole process for me from start to finish?

Of course, we are uniquely placed to facilitate your needs, providing easy high-street access to professional services when you need them. We provide a travel vaccination service in partnership with prescribing doctors who will establish the required vaccination for your travel destination. They share the prescription and all relevant details directly with your chosen Boots Pharmacy, who will then administer the vaccinations at a time and date that suits you. I’m a bit nervous about the appointment itself.

What actually happens during the in-store consultation? It’s completely natural to be somewhat apprehensive – I don’t know anyone who loves injections! But our pharmacists are experienced and confident in guiding you through the process. The majority of pharmacy-administered vaccines are delivered into the deltoid muscle at the top of the arm, so the pharmacist will need you to expose this area – ideally by wearing a short-sleeved top.

: The pharmacist will provide you with all required information, double-check your answers to various pre-screening questions, and once you are ready, administer the required vaccinations into either or both arms according to your requirements. : The entire process takes place in our dedicated, private consultation rooms, and you are more than welcome to bring someone along with you if necessary.

: After your vaccines are administered, we ask that you wait in the pharmacy for a few minutes to ensure that you are feeling okay. If you have any concerns at all, our trained staff are right on hand to support you. Every winter it feels like a toss-up between getting the flu vaccine, a COVID-19 booster, or both. Is it safe to get them at the same time?

Absolutely, it is recommended. Many vaccines can be administered during the same visit, typically into different arms or different areas of the designated muscle in the same arm. We offer combined appointments for this exact reason, as it makes it much easier for patients by reducing the need for multiple follow-up visits.

My toddler is starting crèche this year and I know Boots offers a children’s flu vaccine, but my little one is afraid of needles. Is there an alternative available at the pharmacy? There has been fantastic development for children in recent years: the children’s flu vaccine is administered intranasally. It involves a very quick and completely painless spray up each nostril.

Of course, young children will be wary of anything new like this, but we have found it to be a resounding success that doesn’t cause any undue distress to the child. The consultation takes place in our dedicated private consultation room, providing a quiet area. Your child can sit comfortably on a parent’s lap, and many of our consultation rooms can accommodate buggies. Our pharmacists work closely with parents to make the whole process as quick and seamless as possible.

I keep seeing headlines about the RSV vaccine for older adults. My parents are both in their late 60s, can they walk into Boots to get this or does it require a doctor’s prescription first? Adults over 60 years are at a higher risk of severe RSV disease or complications following infection, particularly if they have chronic medical conditions or weakened immune systems.

Vaccination helps the body build protection before the RSV season begins, so it’s great that you are keeping an eye out for what might benefit your parents. This vaccine does require a prescription, but that is all part of our RSV vaccination service. A consultation is completed online with our prescribing partners, who will send the prescription to your chosen pharmacy.

You can then easily make an appointment online with that pharmacy for administration at your local Boots at the time that suits your parents. I’m in my late 30s and completely missed out on the HPV vaccine when I was in school. Is this something an adult can still get done privately at a Boots pharmacy? Indeed, you can.

This is another pioneering service that we are extremely proud of offering to the population of Ireland. The HPV vaccine is recommended for both men and women and is suitable from ages 16 to 45, so you are well within the age range. A prescription is required for this vaccine, but again this is all part of the HPV vaccination service.

An online consultation is completed with our prescribing partners; if they deem it appropriate for you, they will generate a prescription and send it to your chosen pharmacy, then you book an appointment online for a time that suits you. HPV can require multiple doses depending on the patient, but this will all be explained to you by the prescribing doctor and Boots pharmacist.

An elderly friend recently had a painful bout of shingles and I’d love to protect my grandad and myself. Can I book a shingles vaccine at Boots, and how do I know if I’m eligible for the service? I’m so sorry to hear that, and I hope they are doing okay now. Shingles can be a really painful infection.

Anyone who has had chickenpox is susceptible to shingles, which can cause severe discomfort and, in some cases, long-term nerve pain. : The vaccination is recommended for everyone over 50 years of age, as well as for those under 50 who have an increased risk of infection. : You can book an appointment directly with the pharmacist for administration by completing some pre-screening questions online. They should easily be able to accommodate you and your grandfather together.

: Shingles is a two-dose schedule. After the administration of your first dose, the pharmacy team will book you in for your follow-up appointment at a time that suits you. If you wish to discuss vaccines in more detail, feel free to call your local Boots pharmacist or complete the online pre-screening questions at‘You don’t have to do it all’: Miriam Hussey on creating a calm and regulated childhood for our kids

It was something that was organised by our school, thankfully. It was mainly because it really gave a good insight into all the different courses that were on offer. Dublin colleges have lots of open days, as does Galway, but I'm from Waterford and travelling up and missing days of school to go to all of these open days wasn't really feasible for me. Higher Options gave me an option to actually see these courses and talk to the people without having to make the big long trek to all the colleges further up the country.
