A new Subaru Impreza is coming this month.

Ever since the WRX was spun off as its own model in 2014, the Subaru Impreza has disappeared from the car-enthusiast radar. Despite small cars declining in popularity here in North America, Subaru has stuck with the Impreza as its entry-level model and will continue to do so. The company announced Thursday that the 2024 Impreza will debut on November 17 at the L.A. Auto Show.

Interestingly enough, the debut will be hosted by skateboarder-turned-rallycross-driver Bucky Lasek, and his daughter, Paris. Does this imply a new enthusiast focus for Subaru's most affordable model? Probably not, but it is noteworthy. We'll keep hoping for a modern 2.5RS. The teaser sketch showed that Subaru is sticking with a hatchback body style for the new Impreza. We suspect it'll look a lot like, if not identical, minus the body cladding and jacked-up ride height. It will ride on Subaru's Global Platform, which underpins everything the automaker sells, save the BRZ and the Solterra, which uses a Toyota-developed EV platform.

Subaru being Subaru, the new Impreza will assuredly come standard with all-wheel drive and a boxer four-cylinder, likely the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated unit used across the brand's lineup. The current Impreza comes standard with a five-speed manual in its base trim, but it's anyone's guess as to whether this transmission will carry over into the new car.

In 2021, the Impreza actually outsold the WRX/STI, with 34,791 units moved compared with 27,141 units. Unsurprisingly, Subaru sold over 100,000 more units of the Crosstrek in the same period, but as the Crosstrek and Impreza are so similar, we suspect it doesn't cost too much extra to offer both. Plus, with its $20,815 base price, the Impreza is one of the cheapest all-wheel drive cars for sale in the U.S. That alone seems to justify its existence.
