Sudan's military has detained the country's Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok in an apparent coup, only 36 months after former ruler Omar Hasan al-Bashir was overthrown by the army.post that the joint military forces had placed Hamdok under house arrest and pressured him to release a"pro-coup statement."The ministry said the military also detained several top cabinet members and civilian members of the Transitional Sovereignty Council.

The ministry said Hamdok urges the Sudanese to"hold on to peace and occupy streets to defend their revolution." The detention of Hamdok and other officials comes only a month after authorities said they had stopped a coup attempt by loyalists of long-time dictator al-Bashir. As news spread of the arrests, protesters flooded the streets of the capital Khartoum. Local news channels showed burning tires in the city and plumes of smoke filling the skies. Internet connections had also been cut and the military has closed bridges, the information ministry.
