Rishi Sunak in row with officers as he rebuffs Scotland Yard chief’s call for tougher powers to tackle extremismis facing a backlash from senior politicians, police and legal figures after questioning Scotland Yard’s lack of action against protesters who chanted “jihad” during a Palestine rally.Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also urged ministers to look at addressing “gaps in the law” as he warned of a “huge increase” in hate crimes in recent weeks.
After a pre-planned meeting with Sir Mark and the Jewish Community Crime, Policing, and Security Taskforce, the Home Office said Ms Braverman “recognised the complexities of the law “in policing aspects of these protests and prosecutor decisions” and stressed her support for the police.
He said hate crime and terror laws have not “taken full account of the ability of some extremist groups to see around those laws and propagate some pretty toxic messages over social media”.
