But the Home Secretary's attacks on her own party's record suggest she's braced for Opposition
Some Conservative MPs worry about the danger of overreach in the rhetoric, especially if it makes their party look like it is importing the American hard right’s evangelical approach to moral issues like abortion, marriage and gay rights.
Cates attacked the rise of no-fault divorce, the expansion of childcare , and even expensive university education, as reasons for the declining number of babies. The real risk is that this plays into Labour’s own attack that the Conservatives are now relegating themselves to the fringes. Not for nothing did Keir Starmer say the latest conferences resembled “mad hatters’ tea parties”, while Angela Rayner attacked them as “cranks” addicted to conspiracy theoriesWhat may have concerned No 10 and Rishi Sunak more was that Kruger, Braverman and Cates effectively sounded like critics of their own government rather than defenders of it.
But the biggest danger for the Tories is that these conferences suggest their party is not just out of touch with mainstream opinion on the role of religion in politics, but out of touch with daily economic reality. For those suffering from food, mortgage and energy bill hikes, on top of years of squeezed wages, more Tory infighting may look pretty enraging too.
