Rishi Sunak has faced down calls for the UK to turn its back on European human rights laws after the Government controversial Rwanda asylum deal hit its latest legal challenge ChaplainChloe reports:

No 10 sources said they were confident the deficiencies had been rectified, pointing Rwanda does not have so-called “returns agreements” with other countries so would be unable to ship someone back to their place of origin.

Responding to the ruling, Mr Sunak said: “Rwanda is a safe country. The High Court agreed. The UNHCR have their own refugee scheme for Libyan refugees in Rwanda. We will now seek permission to appeal this decision to the Supreme Court.”, who has been outspokenly critical of lawyers leading the appeals against the deportation plan, argued the current system was “rigged against the British people” on the issue.

Asked if she was blaming “lefty lawyers” or “the blob” for the setback, Ms Braverman said: “The system is rigged against the British people, it’s as simple as that.” The Prime Minister’s spokesman distanced himself from the suggestion, arguing that the Home Secretary was merely pointing out that the “powers we had previously were not sufficient” to “break this dangerous cycle” of small boat crossings.

Sir Edward Leigh and Mark Francois, long-term sceptics of the UK’s membership of the convention, suggested the UK should push for a “derogation” from ECHR.Nations signed up to the ECHR have the opportunity to derogate from their obligations in exceptional circumstances.
