The Prime Minister is heading to Paris today to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in the first Anglo-French summit for five years.
One of Rishi Sunak’s main focuses for the meeting will be on pushing the French to persuade fellow EU leaders to sign a “returns agreement” which will allow the UK to send failed asylum seekers back to the continent after hemigrants crossing the English Channel on small boats. If a wider deal on returning migrants who arrive on English beaches to France is not agreed it could become a major problem for Mr Sunak’s plan to remove migrants who travel to the UK illegally from the country within 28 days.
