Sunak has long been under pressure from the right of his party who want him to adopt a more free-market approach But now a group of “one nation” Tory MPs has come forward to challenge the PM to deliver on “levelling-up” promises 🔴 HugoGye reports

The Mayor insisted that advanced manufacturing of goods such as batteries for electric cars would form the basis for long-term prosperity, saying: “You look at all the countries in the world which are in the very best in terms of affluence, advanced manufacturing is a key element of it. The US is the obvious example, despite its apparently laissez-faire attitudes. So it is a huge driver of wealth.

Sir Robert, the former justice secretary, hit out at colleagues on the right who want to minimise the role of the Government in the economy, as he promised “an unapologetic call of support for sensible interventions that make a difference”.: “Returning to these tired old tropes about the free market and about ideological conservatism is no substitute for following through on a manifesto that we were all elected to deliver.

He said: “It is essential that monies that have been allocated for levelling up are actually spent, and therefore the Treasury needs to get off the next of DLUHC and allow DLUHC to get on with the job, working with local authorities… A sense of urgency as to that I think would be welcome. In the book, Katherine Fletcher, MP for South Ribble, called on ministers to commit to major transport projects in order to avoid breaking the party’s promises to the North of England.
