‘It will take years for things to take effect and time is one thing the Prime Minister does not have,’ one NHS Trust chief executive tells theipaper PMGallagher1 reports
in a move that will see around 200,000 appointments and operations postponed, adding to the growing backlog.: “We’ve been wanting to see a proper workforce plan for years so it is good that it is almost here, but change will not happen overnight. It will take years for things to take effect and time is one thing the Prime Minister does not have, given he has to call a general election next year at the latest.
The consultant said: “Will the Prime Minister have listened to the council? I’m looking forward to seeing whether he has, because anything less than that will be seen as a disappointment. Ministers have been terrible at getting ahead of problems before they arrive and in 15 years we’ll have even more people with neurological conditions and multiple co-morbidities [illnesses] who need looking after from specialists and we simply must have the numbers of staff to cope.
Pressed on how long it will take to see the benefits of the changes, Mr Sunak conceded it could take “five, 10, 15 years for these things to come through”. He added: “I’ve always said the overall waiting list was not going to come down until next year.”and virtual wards. The new package of measures is also expected to include more details on apprentice-doctor roles which NHS England hopes will fill staffing gaps.
