Atlantic City set a record of 71 degrees, beating a previous high that was set in 1959, while Newark tied an 87-year-old record.

A storm in Canada that drew warm air up from the mid-Atlantic region sent the temperature in Atlantic City up to 71 degrees at 3:11 p.m., a record high for March 6, said Patrick O’Hara, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Mount Holly station. It soundly beat the previous record of 68 degrees set in 1959, O’Hara said.

“This pattern is a from a really strong storm up in Canada, pulling a lot of very warm air from the mid-Atlantic,” “O’Hara said, noting the skies had been partly cloudy. “If we had had more sun today, some of the temperatures would have been a couple of degrees higher.” O’Hara couldn’t say whether Millville broke or tied a record, however, because the weather service only keeps historical temperature data for Newark, Atlantic City and Trenton. The state’s capital hit a high of 66 on Sunday, five degrees cooler than its record of 71.

“We could be in the 70′s again tomorrow,” he said. “The end of the front goes through tomorrow night. The rest of the week will be closer to normal, in the 5O’s.”
