Forecasters believe there is a small chance the previous 25.1C record high could be surpassed

Stephen Dixon, spokesman for the Met Office previously said: “It’s not anything we’d call a heatwave, but there are some signals for later next week and into next weekend for higher temperatures, particularly in the South.Next weekend, the longest periods of sunny spells are expected to be experienced in Wales and the south-west of England.

The recent high daytime and nighttime temperatures, which most of the UK has experienced have been above average – but parts of south-east England have been near or almost a little below average. According to the Met Office, recent chilly mornings and evenings experienced in some areas have been caused by drier-than-average weather in May.

This week the Met Office and the UK Health Agency launched a weather alert system – which warns the public when extreme temperatures could cause a risk to public health and safety. It comes after a record 40.3C record UK temperature was recorded in Coningsby, Lincolnshire last year.
