Sven-Goran Eriksson revealed his diagnosis of terminal cancer back in January - and the former England manager has opened up on his 'good life' while also discussing his high-profile affairs
Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has died aged 76 as the world of football pays tribute to one of the games biggest characters.
And the 76-year-old told how the still waters could be his final resting place – before he goes on to deliver a poignant goodbye message as his time on Earth nears its end. Sven says: “I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when we die, but life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is. Hopefully at the end people will say, yeah, he was a good man, but everyone will not say that.
It also charts what are expected to be the final months of his life after he revealed in January he had pancreatic cancer and has “at best” a year to live. Since falling ill, Sven has spent almost all his time at his Swedish home in Sunne, and has reconnected with his family. On a trip to the nearby Fryken lake last autumn, he says: “Beautiful place, it makes you calm. It makes me calm. Below the mountain there my father grew up.
His close pal Anders Runebjer says: “Sunne is a very good place to come back to. He has resettled and he has found peace I think.” Sven was not well enough to come to London to promote the film this week as planned, suggesting he may only have weeks left. He was represented by his children at the launch and Lina tells how they have now grown closer.
Speaking of the moments that led to his cancer diagnosis, Sven tells how he woke up feeling “dizzy” one day and was rushed to hospital. Johan recalls: “I had 10 missed calls from my sister. Dad’s in the emergency room and he is not in a good way.” Sven had suffered five strokes. Doctors then spotted his tumour.
